Google Trends: Chess is Bigger than Formula 1

In 2016, Chess was more popular search term in Google than Formula 1, according to data compiled by Google Trends.

Interest in chess peaked during the 2016 World Chess Championship Match that was held in November in New York City. The Match was record breaking in terms of online audience and media coverage, totaling 3.5 bln contacts and reaching the audience over 1 bln people globally. 

The next Championship Match will be held by World Chess under patronage of FIDE in November of 2018.
